Respondus LockDown Browser

      Troubleshooting Tips

    Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom web browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard/Courses. Instructors can choose to require the LockDown browser for any existing deployed test in their course. When a student uses Respondus LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another website, or access other applications on their computer. When an assessment is started, students are locked into the test until submitted for grading.

    Students must download the LockDown Browser from myMason. Instructions can be found in the Respondus Tools module located in the Courses tab on the myMason website. Student Instructions »

    Students taking a test in the Testing Center do not need to download the LockDown Browser as it is already installed. The instructor must make separate arrangements to use the Testing Center.

    Note: Respondus Monitor is an additional measure of security that records the student taking the test via webcam video. Students must have access to a computer and a functional webcam. More information is available here.

    How to require the LockDown Browser:

    First, create your test as you normally would in your course. And add it to a Content Area such as Assessments.

    1. Select Course Tools from your course's Control Panel

    2. Select Respondus LockDown Browser

    3. Click on the Settings button next to the test you want to require Respondus LockDown Browser for and choose Modify Settings

    4. Select the “Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this test” option

    5. Optionally, enter a password students will need to enter to begin the test*

    6. Click Save and Close

    Remind your students they must download, install, and open the LockDown Browser application to take this test.

    BB Test Options page*Whether or not you enter a password, an encrypted password will be entered on the Blackboard Test Options page and the Password option will be checked. The LockDown password will overwrite any password you entered on the Test Options page. While the encrypted password will not match the LockDown password (if there is one), DO NOT change this password on the Test Options page. 

    If you entered a password on the Respondus options page, give that password out to students or testing center. If you did not enter a password on the Respondus options page, you do not need to give students or testing center any password.


    Warning: To preserve the settings used by LockDown Browser, do NOT modify these settings in Test Options: 1) Name 2) Open Test in a New Window, 3) Require a password, 4) Password. If these settings have been modified the test status will appear as an "Error."

    If the instructor changes settings in the Test Options or other errors occur, return to the LockDown Tools page and click the "Fix it!" button next to a test.

    Blackboard question type File Response is not supported in LockDown Browser as it could lead to potential exploit through the dialog box.

    Once students begin the test, they will not be able to leave the test or quit LockDown Browser until they submit the test. They will not be able to save and resume the test later.

    Best Practices

    Have students complete a practice test that uses Respondus LockDown Browser to make sure they have installed the browser correctly.
